BREAKING, Helicopter Crashes Into Hudson River In New York City

New York City police have responded to a helicopter crash in the city after the helicopter crashed into the Hudson River.

The helicopter pilot was reported to be alive and had escaped the chopper after it crashed, The New York Daily News reported.

A helicopter that had just taken off from a Midtown heliport made a crash landing in the Hudson River Wednesday but the pilot, who had no passengers, escaped nearly unscathed, officials said.

The 35-year-old pilot, who was working for an Uber-style helicopter shuttle service to area airports called Blade, had just refueled at one part of the W. 30th St. heliport and taken off so he could swing around and land at another area to pick up passengers when he suddenly lost altitude about 2:20 p.m., sources said.

The pilot tried to land at the heliport but fell short of the landing pad, crashing in the water about 50 feet away.

Texas tourist Al Gaydos, 74, was sipping drinks with his wife on a nearby floating Coast Guard lightship turned bar known as the Frying Pan off of W. 27th St. when he saw the copter go down.

“When he took off again, he was hovering over the land,” Gaydos said. “It just hovered there for maybe a couple of minutes before it just came down. It was a very big splash.”

The rotary blades snapped and flew off once they sliced into the water, he said.

“It looked like the pilot did what he could to get over the water otherwise we would have had real trouble,” Gaydos said.

The chopper’s flotation devices were activated but the helicopter flipped over as first responders pulled it toward a nearby dock.
